Web Tambouille : Why did you create Nodester ?
Chris Matthieu : I created Nodester over the holidays (on my vacation) because I got tired of waiting for the other Node.JS hosting providers to send me an invitation. It turned out to be a great opportunity to learn more about the underpinnings of Node.JS and at the same time create an open source project that all Node.JS developers could use to host their own applications.
WT : Why are you a big fan of Node.JS ?
WT : What is your main goal with Nodester ? Become the Heroku of Node.JS ?
CM : We accomplished our initial goals of the project as most of the other Node.JS hosting providers have now made commitments to offer smaller application hosting. I like to like that we disrupted a market. We have also emplowered many developers and even several companies to run Nodester in their datacenters and on public clouds including: Amazon, Rackspace, and GoGrid. We are currently offering free Node.JS hosting on our open source platform running in Amazone EC2 through grants provided by Tropo (http://tropo.com), the cloud communications company. We plan to charge for hosting larger applications in the future as well as for professional services and yes, become the Heroku of Node.JS hosting services. I like the open source business model very much like MySQL and SugarCRM. We are establishing trust and giving back to the community.
WT : Main features in the next releases ?
CM : We have new updates for Nodester releasing every couple of days! We now have a core team that consists of 4 developers and we are looking for more help. We also have many contributors adding value to the project every day by submitting pull requests to our open source platform on GitHub (https://github.com/nodester). I just heard about one developer working on a Nodester dashboard using our RESTful APIs to make administration even easier. I also know of a Linux admin that is working on an installation package that will make it easy to deploy Nodester on any Linux machine ! This will allow us to bring Node.JS hosting to the masses to further disrupt the traditional hosting market !
WT : Something special to say ?
WT : What is your favorite dessert ?
CM : I love desserts Creme Brules are my favorite. We usually order one from new restaurants my family visits just so we can compare them to others we have tried over the years at other restaurants. Being French Cajun myself, I will also always go out of my way to find restaurants that serve Cafe DuMonde-style beignets (http://www.cafedumonde.com/). Beignets were brought to Louisiana by the Acadians. These were fried fritters, sometimes filled with fruit. Today, the beignet is a square piece of dough, fried and covered with powdered sugar and served warm. OMG, that makes me hungry for one :)
